Patron edition!

Hi Patrons! This week I started tinkering on a new public sector project, and I was having quite a bit of fun being a techie nerd. I feel like I haven't had the opportunity to MAKE things a lot in the last months, and so I'm looking forward to tinkering as much as possible in between all my events and things. I tinkered with my website over the holidays, and I guess I got the bug for it. First, though, it's sunny, it's Friday, and I should take a walk. How are you?

Maybe I'm wordy

This week I spoke about the climate emergency and Greenpeace's open source project Planet 4 in front of, I don't know, somewhere between 500 and a thousand people. I had a Brittney mic, that's my favourite kind.

Red Hat is still using the word "meritocracy", which makes me cringe, but I don't try to fix their vernacular. I don't use the word "meritocracy" anymore unless I'm being quite critical. This article explains why. but I actually have Tsering to than, as she and I had a lively discussion years ago, wherein her passionate debate changed my thoughts on reclamation of the term. It's a bullshit theory that doesn't work in the real world (just like capitalism!). Wealth isn't about talent, which is why I have always been vehemently anti-starfucker. It's about luck.

In other semantically relevant quandaries, in the 1970s someone decided to invent this new word "multi-hyphenate" and Ryan Holiday was using it and I learned about it's existence for the first time this week (and was immediately irritated). I was using multipotenitality, y'all. Or "generalist" or "polymath". I don't even like hyphens, and now this "multi-hyphenate" is all over the place. FFS.

And finally a stain on my perfection (just kidding), I can never, ever, remember the word "etymology" without searching "study of the origin of words" despite the fact that I do this search about once a month.

Maybe I'm intent

We're all just primates. Photo from a dead URL, looks like NBC.
"Setting aside the geopolitical concerns, “TikTok is the closest that the world has ever come to ‘the Entertainment’ of Infinite Jest, an immersive experience that’s so addictive that its users forget to eat or drink or sleep. Just be thankful that your phone has finite battery life.” —Felix Salmon, Axios and Slate Money"

Thank you Slate for this incredible list of evil. It's always good to have an overview and understanding of what to avoid. Seriously, friends, if you're still Facebooking, WhatsApping and Instagraming, if you're not at least trying to find alternative ways from Amazon to buy crap online, if you're still shrugging and saying "doesn't really matter", do remember this: Your behaviour matters. If it didn't, your parents wouldn't have tried to teach you that it did.

Emotional regulation is a hard road, I know, those primal stories are embedded in your brainz. Our cultures, our societies, our parents, our environments make the truths taboo.

You have more power than you think you do.

Maybe I need help?

I still don't do resolutions, but I do like these kinds of resolutions. As always, thanks for reading and feel free to hit reply. I'm a real person on the other side of this thing, FYI.
