Maybe I'm registering

The sun is shining for the first time in what feels like a year. The birds and I did mountain pose in the backyard for a moment. Someone is levelling the blackberry bushes on the field. Now I can see into the little forest across the street. It was chaos just the other day.

Change is an incessant beating drum in our lives, yet we have to train our brains not to freak out about it. That's what the whole mindfulness thing is all about, training yourself to notice change and just fucking deal with it. Change in emotion, change in circumstance, change in the body, change in the breath. Change in the scented candle that was burning and the massage therapist didn't have the same flavour but you've got 45 minutes left and they figured your zonked out body wouldn't register the difference between lavender and Jerusalem sage even though it's been shown that smell is the sense that stops working last after you're an actual corpse so it makes sense that it would be highly vigilant when you're in that halfway state of relaxation.
  • Question: why do people often call a scent a flavour?
  • Answer: sorry, I've gone off-piste.
Dealing with change is what therapy is about. It's what driving is about. It's what gardening and sleeping and cooking is about. It's what living is about.

You'd think our brains would just get used to it.

Maybe I'm watching

Salesforce, the biggest, most influential* tech company people have never heard of, hired the Boston Consulting Group after "activist investors" decided they're not getting enough millions as shareholders. BCG gave the company absolutely bullshit advice that ignores all current research on productivity, remote working, motivation and employee retention.
  • Question: How does a burnt out, demotivated workforce create value?
  • Answer: They stop wasting their time being creative and innovative.
A third of American children are hopeless, especially girls, and a well funded conservative group spent 20 million on a Jesus ad for the Super Bowl. I'm guessing throwing money around to control policy helped make girls sad. Read Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men if you haven't already.
  • Question: Erm, what do these things have to do with one another?
  • Answer: the emperors are getting naked af.
Anyway, I wonder what happens next.
* Marc Benioff, the founder of Salesforce, is responsible for the idea and name of the App Store and pretty much invented Software as a Service (SaaS). Tech being ubiquitous in our lives has a lot to do with this.

Maybe I need help?

Out of curiosity, can you tell the difference between truth and fiction in this newsletter? Sometimes I just make stuff up. Anyway, here's a bonus link about cryonics. I'm leaving you with decaying heads...we have such a weird relationship, don't we? Hit reply.
