Maybe I'm ordering

My plan for the weekend is to construct a wall-sized bookshelf, the first custom piece of furniture I've ever purchased in my life and a place for my growing anti-library. It will replace several standalone shelves that are scattered and mismatched. I expect a measurable uptick in my mental health as ordering chaos is something that tends to make me feel creative and alive. I've always wanted an entire wall of books with one of those sliding ladders. The ceiling is too low to need a ladder (farmhouse, 300+ years old), but there's still reason enough to build something that glides in front of the books. That's a project for another weekend though. First, the shelf.

This week there was some chaos ordering in a couple of our ongoing projects. I noticed that there's a specific moment when I feel the "overwhelmed" transition to "inspired". It's the moment when I realise that I can actually order my own thoughts or a mess of information. It happens over and over again though, which means that over and over again, I suffer from an internal fear that my brain will be capable of ordering the chaos.

Maybe I'm gambling

"In reality, as tech reporter Mike Elgan has noted, “The two biggest buzzwords in tech right now—the ‘metaverse’ and ‘Web3’—describe platforms that don’t exist, aren’t expected to exist even by boosters for a decade at least, and probably will never exist."

I've linked to this Bored Ape stuff (NFT economy run amok) in previous newsletters, and I watch the crypto space for reasons. Actually, the crypto space and wall street are equally interesting to me from a mental health perspective. I've always had an addictive personality but never fallen prey to gambling addiction. When I've recovered my buy-in, I only leave profit in the proverbial pot. I only play with money I can afford to lose. Seems obvious af, but this is not how most people gamble (aka invest).

Even if you're not here for my tech-related ramblings, this stuff is fascinating. There are all sorts of worlds out there that we aren't a part of, but that do or will affect us. On Netflix, I'm letting my eyes, ears and mouth absolutely bleed as I attempt to watch a limited series about Anna Sorokin – the German/Russian girl who pretended to be an heiress. The sheer skullduggery of the entire story on high society folks is breathtaking. This is what the Bored Ape Yacht Club is doing, this is what the world of crypto and most of Wall Street are doing, this is what the rich are doing to all the rest of us – it's a ridiculous gamble and the house always wins.

Eat the rich, my friends, we're nowhere near the sort of balance we need to save ourselves and our planet, and it's more of the same here in the "future of finance". Your money is power, wield it for a better world.

Maybe I need help?

Think about the number of conferences there used to be in the before times. Entire expos on hand dryers or furniture polish. How often do you think about your limited view of reality? How often do you stand in line at the grocery store and realise you are absolutely out of sync with the rest of the humans? We see it all differently, we really do. It's amazeballs that we're able to communicate anything at all.
