Maybe I'm quoting?

My brain went in lots of directions this week as I realised exactly how much time I gained back by closing up the big Catalyst Definition project we've been working on for the last several months. On Tuesday afternoon, I skipped out of work and biked around. On Wednesday morning I took it easy because Wednesday afternoon I had Red Hat Summit, a Greenpeace meeting, a second to last Catalyst meeting, AND a badges workshop. I read some stuff, tried to process why I still get angry about stuff I don't care about, had a hard boiled egg. Oh, and I submitted a smack-you-in-your-head kind of essay to Dark Mountain. We'll see if it fits their concept of Extractivism.

While I was angry about someone imitating me, I reminded myself that"imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". I searched for it and found that the full quote is

“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” Oscar Wilde

Touché, I'd forgotten about the "mediocrity" word, and the resulting schadenfreude was, in fact, Freude. I also discovered the activist and writer who wrote "The role of the artist is to make revolution irresistible", a line I saw spray painted on an archway in Rome years ago and took to heart as my role in life. I added one of her books to my list and thoroughly enjoyed learning about her.

This is terrifying to me, so I'll share this as well. This guy, Tim Urban, is fairly famous seems-like-a-tech-bro who draws stick figures and had a TED talk. His wife studied law. Whatever, they’re random internet people. The wife's startup is a kind of concierge doctors office in NYC. I couldn’t find any info on the actual, like, doctors they work with. I literally read the small print. No mentions of who these doctors might be. I assume they have medical degrees? I am cynical af about tech people who think "let's disrupt medicine, but we don't need an MD on our team..." Erm.

Look, I'm all for systemic improvement, trust me, I am. Perhaps I'm cynical because the tech industry likes to avoid laws and regulations that are there to protect us. I'm not saying the laws are perfect, but the capitalist interests of startups should not be driving the design of our entire world. We've already seen why. I'm not even going to fish out articles. This list wasn't in the slightest difficult to remember:
  • Amazon + Unions
  • WeWork + Fraud
  • Über + Rape
  • Facebook + Psychological experiments
  • AirBnB + Theft/Destruction of Property
  • Zoom + Privacy
  • All of the above + Taxes

Maybe I'm outside?

Germany has only vaccinated 25%, and none of that percentage is me. I do think it's interesting, though, that the US demands cult like respect from its citizens but doesn't take care of them if they're abroad.

Millions in Africa and Asia aren't going to be vaccinated anytime soon, so I'm trying to be patient. It's hard, I'm tired of this too. I'm unexplainably livid at the moment. The West not cooperating like they promised makes me sick. The vaccine formulas should be open source. Full stop.
If you have brain stuff, I highly recommend gardening, and sometimes the internet is just good. I'm going outside, my boiling blood needs to simmer down.

Maybe I need help?

You tell me.
