culture, trauma, dissociation

“The concept of double consciousness was coined by W.E.B. du Bois (1868–1963),a Harvard and German trained, American sociologist of African descent, ina psychosocial theory of race (Du Bois,1989). Double consciousness arises from the difference between how others see you (negatively) versus how you see yourself (positively). This distinction then gets internalized as two alternate and co-existing views of oneself.”

Christa Krüger (2020) Culture, trauma and dissociation

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, before Germany went into lockdown, I had a cocktail conversation something like:

“Well, how do you deal with all the crazy in the world when it gets heavy?” I asked halfheartedly.
“To be honest, i watch a couple golden buzzers and go about my day” he said ironically and facetiously.
“Wtf is a golden buzzer?”
“Oh, ha ha, YOU HAVE TO WATCH THEM! Just go to YouTube, they’re from those “Got Talent shows…”
“Got Talent?”
“You know “America’s Got Talent”, Britain’s Got Talent, those singing competitions.”
Actual gif of me:

After this conversations with an “intellectual like me™”, i went down a YouTube rabbit hole and watched way too many golden buzzer clips. They are, these talent show people, on a planet not my own. I don’t understand and thus, I was fascinated.

A couple years ago an editor and publisher I know admitted that he and his wife get a huge kick out of Eurovision. I think I scoffed at the time. But somehow both these events meant that at some point in the last year, I put a reminder in my calendar that Eurovision was starting on May 18th.

An Internet Troll at heart, I live-tooted the seminfinals. For whatever reason embedding didn’t work immediately and I did say it was exclusive content, so if you want to see my snarky comments about Eurovision, you’ll have to work for it!
