Creating space to learn about Open Working

Open Working workshops and sessions

crossposted on the CAST blog

We Are Open is delivering a deep support programme for the national governing bodies (NGBs) of Sport England that scaffolds their entry into the vast and complex world of Open Working. Over the next months we’re running workshops and open working sessions to help NGBs collaborate with one another and increase the diversity and inclusivity of sports across the UK. We’ve started adding our slides and links we share in an easily accessible Notion page, so that folks can go back to things whenever they like.

Workshop 1: Getting started with Open Working

Principles of Open

For folks who have been part of CAST work for the last couple of years, open working isn’t a new term. However, this style of work isn’t “normal”! We’re not conditioned through our societies and upbringings to work this way. So, we kick off our workshop series by introducing participants to the theoretical underpinnings of what open working actually means. We also introduced people to the programme of support and explained how we will use badges to recognise the skills and behaviours that make working openly a success.

Workshop 2: Going further with Open Working

After getting to know folks in Workshop 1, we realised that the most useful way to spend our time together later this year is by offering practical tips and tricks to help with collaboration inside teams and across the network. We’ll get into information management, tools for collaboration and how to start writing about work. We’ll also talk more about the tricky human stuff that our first workshop touched on.

Workshop 3: How to encourage Open Working

Next year, we will go even deeper into what open working looks like in practice. We’ll share case studies and start getting into essential open topics like licensing and remix. We Are Open has resources all over the internet that support and encourage people to work openly. We often talk about how openness in contextual, so we’re looking forward to seeing how our plans for workshop 3 change as we get to know each other in our Open Working Sessions.

Open Working Sessions

Throughout the support programme, NGBs are encouraged to come to our Open Working sessions with their individual contexts, ideas and challenges to get advice from our open working experts! They’re happening weekly up until we break for the holidays.
