We Are Open Co-op & Greenpeace Planet 4

For the last four years, I’ve been working with Greenpeace International mostly on the Planet 4 project. The project is at one point of maturity, having rolled out to over 80% of offices ٩(●ᴗ●)۶ and is ready for the next push towards the vision that we set out.

With the budding Red Hat collaboration, the project has potential contributors waiting to get involved. More broadly, the world of open source is turning towards non-profits in an attempt to quell a disjointedness between values and actions in today’s world. Planet 4 is at the precipice of something gigantic, and We Are Open Co-op wants to make sure P4 has the open support it needs. I, personally, want to protect the cost of investment by making sure the next phases of Planet 4 integrate sustainable open practices.

Involving the co-op means that Greenpeace International will benefit not only from my context, knowledge and expertise, but also from other members. I will still be heavily involved, but with the solidarity of my amazing colleagues, we can do much more than I could do alone. We can provide a level of support around open engagement that will benefit both the project and the team.

The Co-op proposed a 2020 roadmap of its involvement for Planet 4 and we are looking forward to working closely with the Planet 4 team. Our main areas of focus are:

Open Leadership

I will continue to sit on the Steering Committee for the Planet 4 project. In addition, we intend to set up a regular cadence of conversation between the various stakeholders of the project and the P4 team. We hope to facilitate relationships with other Greenpeace departments and colleagues, and help the P4 team coordinate open source contributions and partnerships. We will also help the team come up with open project standards (like feedback mechanisms or peer review processes) as the project moves from the implementation phase into the next.

Open Mindsets

We’re eager and excited to support the team’s design thinking and collaborative decision making initiatives. We will help them translate what the community says into actionable information, and help them with engaging and onboarding community and contributors. Additionally, we will continue to serve as a sort of mindset model, taking calculated risks around engagement and helping push the global organization towards a more open way of being.

Open Engagement

As I have done for many years, the co-op will write and talk about this work. I will continue to represent the open source nature of the Planet 4 project at FOSS conferences, events and in the press. Furthermore, we will facilitate community communication contributions and help manage existing and future relationships to bridge the divide between Greenpeace and technology.

I am very pleased that the co-op is going to help me on a project that is very near and dear to my heart. I’ve been fortunate over the last years to come into Greenpeace and become deeply embedded in the Planet 4 team. I believe this team will greatly benefit from the expertise of my fellow co-op members, and I believe my co-op colleagues will greatly benefit from interacting with the Planet 4 team and other folks at Greenpeace.

Time to get to work!
